In an effort to end racism in medicine wherever it exists and create awareness of racism as a threat to the health of people of color, SIU School of Medicine has established the SIU White Coats 4 Black Lives Scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded to a disadvantaged student who has demonstrated a commitment to social justice.
At SIU Medicine, we acknowledge that racism is a threat to individuals, it is a threat to the health of the public, and, it is a threat to the heart and soul of our nation. We teach all of our learners that health care and medicine are much more than that which occurs within the walls of our hospitals, and clinics and classrooms. We are in the community, proximate to the people, proximate to the racism, learning and understanding, helping to influence thought, helping to tear down barriers and to build up understanding and empowering others to rise above the cruelty. We, at SIU Medicine, institutionally and individually, reject violence and hatred. By supporting this scholarship, you stand with us in continuing this vital mission of educating disadvantaged students who have a deep commitment to social justice.
