The Survivor Recovery Center (SRC) at SIU Medicine is an individual therapy center for those who have experienced trauma related to crime within the past three years. The SRC works with those aged 5 and up in Sangamon County and is based on the Trauma Recovery Center (TRC) Model – a proven framework designed to effectively treat and support survivors of crime. Therapists with specialized training in evidence-based treatment strategies address acute and complex traumatic stress in patients, while also coordinating assertive outreach, case management, community support and multi-disciplinary care. SIU Medicine’s Center is one of 52 nationwide. To date, the SRC has served over 400 patients across Sangamon County.
The Center feels less like a clinic and more like a friend’s home. There are calming areas throughout with a pantry down the hall, where kids and adults can grab a package of raisins for a snack or pasta for dinner. If other pantry staples or hygiene items are running low at home, they can grab an item to help ease any anxiety. This helps create an inviting space for all to help work through trauma and toward a healthier life, and plenty of flexibility regarding the patient’s needs in dealing with trauma.
Now in its fourth year, the Center has helped heal hundreds of trauma victims in the community. Read more in Aspects: https://adobe.ly/423bgPF.
