The endowment was started with an initial generous contribution from Drs. David Steward and Regina Kovach, with continued ongoing support. Dr. Steward completed his residency and chief residency in the SIU Department of Internal Medicine and ultimately joined the faculty on July 1, 1978. Over his nearly 45 years of service to the Department of Internal Medicine and SIU School of Medicine, he selflessly served in a broad range of roles including that of faculty member, Division Chief, Vice Chair, Residency Program Director and Department Chair.
The purpose of this fund is to assist in supporting the residency educational mission of the SIU Department of Internal Medicine. Your support of this fund will provide a venue to recognize Dr. Steward’s profound and lasting impact on the SIU Department of Internal Medicine, as well as provide the venue for friends and alumni to express their gratitude for his passion, energy and profound sense of social justice and community. Dr. Steward continues his active involvement in the department to this day. No one is more synonymous with the SIU Department of Internal Medicine than Dr. Steward.
